As the country’s physicians continue to fight on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, CMS is scheduled to cut Medicare payments by double digits starting January 1, 2021.
This can’t happen - cutting Medicare payments during a pandemic will hurt patients and physicians!
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will be issuing new payment policies in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2021. While the changes have many positive attributes, including improvements for maternity care and much-needed payment increases for physicians delivering primary and complex office-based care to some of our nation’s most vulnerable patients, there is a cost.
CMS operates under a statutory budget neutrality rule that requires any increases in Medicare payments for these office visits to be offset by corresponding decreases. As a result, many physicians now face substantial cuts beginning on January 1, 2021, if Congress does not act before the end of the year.
Payment cuts of this magnitude will surely strain a health care system that is already stressed by the COVID-19 pandemic and could jeopardize patient access to medically necessary services.
In order to safeguard Medicare patients’ access to care during this pandemic, we ask you to contact your member of Congress NOW and urge them to sign on to the recent bi-partisan “Dear Colleague” letter on the issue being circulated by Congressmen Ami Bera, MD and Larry Buschon, MD.
Health care professionals across the spectrum are reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 emergency as they continue to serve patients during this global pandemic and now is certainly not the time to cut physician payments.

Patients with underlying health conditions such as lung cancer are at greater risk for infection or complications from COVID-19. Because of this increased risk, it is important that these patients are carefully managed, with telemedicine replacing in-person visits where possible. However, monitoring patients via telemedicine requires special attention, particularly because symptoms of COVID-19 infection are similar to common adverse events associated with lung cancer treatment.
This activity, “Lung Cancer and COVID-19 in the Outpatient Setting: What Clinicians Need to Know” will provide clinicians with the most up-to-date guidance on managing lung cancer during the current pandemic, including information on the pathophysiology of Sars-Cov-2, the risk of infection in patients with lung cancer, and strategies to manage patient care and counsel through telemedicine.
Some topics covered:
- The Pathophysiology of COVID-19
- Patient and Disease Features that Increase Risk of COVID-19 Infection and Complications in Patients with Lung Cancer
- Recommendations for Managing Patients with Lung Cancer in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Pursuant to law, New Jersey controlled dangerous substances (CDS) registrants are required to register with the New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program (NJPMP). To date, approximately 2,500 New Jersey CDS Physicians have been identified as non-compliant with the NJPMP registration requirement. As a result, the CDS registration for said physicians has been placed in “active non-renewable” (ANR) status and they will be unable to renew their CDS during the October 2020 renewal period until they’ve successfully registered with the NJPMP.
In the coming weeks, a detailed notice will be emailed to those CDS Physicians placed in ANR status advising them of the status of their CDS and the NJPMP registration requirement and instruct them to immediately register with the NJPMP.
No action is required by CDS physicians who already have an active NJPMP account.
CDS Physicians who are not registered with the NJPMP must:
STEP 1: Register to access the NJPMP
Immediately register at https://newjersey.pmpaware.net/. Registrants will be required to enter his/her full professional license number; federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number; NJ CDS registration number; full name as it appears on his/her professional license; unique email address; and other identifying information.
STEP 2: Notify the Drug Control Unit
Once the physician has registered to access the NJPMP, he/she should notify the New Jersey Drug Control Unit via email at [email protected].
STEP 3: Permission to renew CDS registration
Following verification of the Physicians NJPMP registration, the status of his/her CDS registration will be updated to “active” and he/she will receive an email permitting him/her to renew his/her CDS during the October 2020 renewal period.
Physicians with an active CDS registration that do not prescribe controlled dangerous substances or do not currently hold a New Jersey DEA registration, in accordance with N.J.A.C.13:45H-1.2(m), must email the New Jersey Drug Control Unit to place his/her CDS registration in “inactive” status.

IMPORTANT COVID19 UPDATE
Morris County will be discontinuing COVID-19 testing at County College of Morris (CCM) on Friday, June 26, 2020. In addition, no testing will be offered on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 due to a scheduled event at the CCM.
The County commenced operation of the test site on March 30th and has tested over 7,000 individuals. The decision to discontinue operations is due to less than 1% of persons testing positive over the last couple of weeks and greater availability of RT-PCR testing at pharmacies and urgent care centers.
